Problems associated with the control and maintenance of lime kiln induced draft (I.D.)
fans are commonplace in the pulp and paper industry. Typically, kiln operators
encounter difficulties in controlling temperature along the length of the kiln
because the I.D. fan is not properly sized to handle the designated flue gas flow rate.
Other problems associated with the improper selection of the I.D. fan are wear problems to
the impeller and housing, build-up problems on the fan impeller, and continuous
bearing problems associated with thrusting or high frequency vibrations. In all
instances, the corrective procedure is the redesign of the impeller so that the new
I.D. fan capacity is closer to the requirements of the kiln flue gas flow rate.
